Even with an EDI system such as Orion’s PathFinder solution, companies frequently find that they still need to manually process orders and other business documents from partners who are not EDI enabled. Often, the resource that this demands is out of all proportion to the amount of business it represents. With a well implemented EDI roll-out, as much as 80-90% of the business data can be processed automatically, but moving the remaining 10-20% away from manual paperwork and faxes can be difficult.
The solution to this is the Rigel E-Business System, a web-based Interface that allows the exchange of documents with non-EDI enabled partners. Rigel provides a secure and easy to use method for the entry and receipt of business documents such as orders, stock information, despatch advices and invoices. It can also be used for other more complex bespoke business processes, such as the handling of a returns process or the controlled uploading and transfer of data files.
Unlike many such web systems, Rigel is designed to be integrated to an existing data exchange system. In this way, the Rigel system becomes just another EDI trading partner, using the existing EDI infrastructure, with no additional development needed to the company’s main application system.
Rigel has been written as a modular system, to keep it as flexible as possible. By using open web standards at every stage, the Rigel owner is ensured that the product will not lock the company into one development path.
At the heart of the system is the Rigel database, used as the main repository of data, and Interface to PathFinder. Linked to this is a standard web server - we recommend Apache on Linux, although Microsoft IIS on Windows NT can also be used. This machine can be hosted either externally or within the company, according to networking requirements.
Rigel comes with its B2B order entry and tracking system included in the base product. A number of additional modules are also available to handle different business processes. In addition, bespoke modules can be designed and written for specific in-house business processes which can be integrated into the same Rigel framework.
Rigel is suitable for handling both B2B (Business to Business) and B2C (Business to Consumer) transactions. Rigel B2B provides a fast and easy to use Interface, including features such as product searches and both global and customer-specific pricing. Rigel B2C has the facility to add product images, and the grouping of similar products on the same page, to create an attractive web-store, as well as integration to online payment systems such as PayPal, NetBanx and Protx.
Every Rigel owner will have their own requirements for how the Interface should look to the users. Often, this will need to match their existing websites, such that a consistent company image is presented to the outside world. In addition, changes to this image will need to be matched in the Interface without changing the underlying business process.
Within Rigel, the actual page appearance is separated from the active code, and controlled via a content-embeddable HTML template system. This can be tailored in any way required by the owner, and changed without any effect on the actual function of the site. Graphics and stylesheets can be shared with an existing company website to ensure complete uniformity, or designed for the specific purpose of the Rigel Interface.
Rigel is designed to be as easy for your users as possible. By using Perl to create the site, we ensure that it can be used in all modern web browsers. There is no software to install for the users, and no footprint on the user’s machine. Instead, Rigel takes full advantage of standard features of the web browsers to deliver a secure solution that gives the user the required functionality without compromising their security.
Security can be applied at two levels. For standard identification security, a username and password system matched to a unique session key ensures correct identification of the individual user. Due to the design of the system, it is not possible to bypass the login mechanism and any attempt to do so will be spotted immediately and can be logged.
